Dashawtar : The Art Of Konkan

Dashavtar is a mixture of play, expression, song, and dance, which is performed in praise of gods. It is performed in the temple and it is performed in front of the god and is performed at midnight. The Dashavtar is mainly performed in Sindhudurga and Ratnagiri (districts of Maharashtra). The Dashavtar company plays many stories from the olden Indian book like Ramayana and Mahabharata. there are many characters in the play. Before putting makeup and costumes they prey to their weapons and lord Ganpati which they are going to use in the play, then they start doing makeup and put costumes. The role of ladies like Sita in the play of Ramayanaare is also played by a man. They do their makeup themselves and they also look the same as the character in the books. Before the main play lord Ganapati and goddess, Riddhi Siddhi comes and entertains us, after that a demon comes named Shankasuralso entertains us and then the main play begins. Mostly the narrator is lord, Narad Muni.

But slowly and gradually this art is fading away as most of the people are not coming to see the play. Nowadays people are going to cities from villages. And many people who live in the villages are not interested to come and see the play.

So please don’t fade the traditional theaters like Dashavtar.
